Our breeding enterprise came about purely as a result of James’s mare not being as fast as my thoroughbred when we moved up to Scotland and began hunting with the Duke of Buccleuch – he was tired of being left behind! This was fine when the children were small and we hunted with the Lamerton in Devon, as the fields were smaller and he had time to catch up. Hendersyde Africa – as she is called – became our foundation mare. She is by Stonegrove Avant Garde whose line goes back to Akkord, out of a TB mare and is a very good jumper.

HendersydeWe decided to put her to Welton Apollo as TB blood was vital for her and his proven record as an eventer was imperative. The result was a lovely colt who is now advanced, Out of Africa. This horse is ridden by our daughter Charlotte and has done well, having won in hand, placed 2nd in the Under 21 Championships as a seven-year-old, and been selected to represent Great Britain in the Young Rider Championships. Sadly he had to bow out due to lameness at the final trot up selection at Badminton.

We are thrilled that he has finished 6th in his first 3* CCI with a double clear at Bramham in the U25’s against established 3* and 4* horses and followed this success with a 9th placing in the CCI3* at Blenheim in September 2011, 3rd best British combination and best U25.  We had a thrilling 2012 with Out of Africa being placed 2nd in the CIC3* at Houghton and following on with a 5th placing at Luhmuhlen CCI4* in June.  He then completed Badminton in 2013 – see video below.

HendersydeWe currently have Out of Africa’s brother, by It’s Without Doubt, aged seven this time – The Masai Warrior (Simi) out competing. He has shown well in hand, winning Reserve Champion Hunter as a three-year-old at the Border Union Show and displaying many of his elder brother’s traits. He performed well in 2011 with Charlotte and finished the season with two double clears at Novice. He has been given to her sister Georgina to hunt and event.

HendersydeWe also have Hendersyde Limpopo, Hendersyde Africa’s daughter and a half sister to Out of Africa by It’s Without Doubt, as a broodmare. We also have three smart colts, two by Stravinsky and one by Grafenstoltz born on 22nd May 2011. Hendersyde Limpopo is currently the third top Eventing broodmare in the BEF rankings with her current progeny.

Kalimba and Tanganyika finished 2011 with a First Premium and an Elite between them. Kalimba has now gone to Charlotte to start work slowly and will hopefully come out in his five year old year.

Star Of AfricaWe have a very smart yearling by Royaldik out of Rorke’s Drift (a half sister to Out of Africa) and by the TB SetAdrift a son of Slip Anchor. We also have a beautiful filly this year by Thursden Valleye Raphael, named Star of Africa. She is out of Hendersyde Limpopo, in an attempt to breed something rather smaller for Charlotte, and also to allow us to out-cross back to TB and other jumping lines.

Tanganyika has just excelled himself with a second placing at The Royal Highland Show in the Sport Horse 3 year old class, shown by Richard Telford, and will hopefully go on to have a successful eventing career.
